Throughout my life I've come across many conversations about the topic of beauty. It is an interesting thing to hear people express their different ideas about what makes somebody beautiful. To each person, his or her perceived beauty is just as real as the beauty conceived by another who has a completely different perspective. Of course many of us can become unknowingly convinced that what is beautiful is what many advertisements and commercially sold images portrays. For example, myself. Just yesterday when I was at Sephora with my friend, I saw a photo of what I thought was a very pretty girl on the wall and thought "Wow I want to look like her" and I even showed my friend.
But really what is beauty? Is it to be pretty? What's the difference? Though I can sometimes mix the words around, when I think about it, there is a clear difference between the two words.
If I were to portray this formula about the two words: Pretty = skin deep, superficial & Beauty = deep, meaningful, would you agree?
This is not to say that being pretty is bad at all. I mean who can blame somebody for coming off as really pretty to someone else? Good for you! Nice face, nice photo, nice artwork etc. My hope though is that we as a society don't stop at "pretty." I hope we don't end up as a shallow nation. When I stop to think about the word beauty, it always reaches the divine. Something beautiful, is meaningful. I hope that we as a people, when we interact with another person do not end the conversation by just "looking" at a person. I hope we can find something beautiful about someone, something, or somewhere, and can create a beautiful nation, beautiful world. :)
